We'd then change to a Waikiki hotel and use it as a jumping off point for the balance of the sightseeing.
Interesting - I'd say the opposite - the one time we were at the Kona Village Resort, then had to return to Waikiki for my husband's business, I nearly had a nervous breakdown - talk about sensory overload! 7 nts at the Hilton Waikiki & I think I'd be insane too, so I guess any combination is better than none... I'm perfectly fine with Waikiki (gotta be the Hyatt RC tho - I'm totally over the Halekulani now with all the construction & crowds) if we go there first & do all the shopping, sightseeing, restaurants, etc, then go elsewhere to chill out & come home relaxed.
The Kahala isn't a bad idea either - kids would like the dolphins.
