I'd go out of my way in order to fly J to get to Oz rather than Y from LAX. I've done the LAX-SYD route in QF's J (after connecting from the east coast, BTW) and let me tell you that is one damn long flight. No, I haven't done SQ's EWR-SIN or CO's EWR-HKG, but the LAX-SYD 15+ hour stretch was long, even in business class. I'm more used to doing TATL flight from the northeast--Europe's only 6-7 hours away. LAX-SYD's in a different league.
