As much as it sucks for those of you who live in cities that are losing BA service, I think ultimately this was the right thing for BA to do. I don't think the legacy carriers make much money in the US doing little routes if anything they lose money on their shuttle carriers. Then when some of the legacies such as Delta and United have tried to start, they haven't been amazingly successful, and it Delta's case with Song, it failed. The problem is that they can't escape their high costs and truly make a LCC that without it suffering in quality or being more expensive than true LCCs or losing money.

If BA had wanted to perhaps have a successful LCC, they should have created an entire new brand and tried to remove it from BA as much as possible but only slightly maintain the "we're part of BA" factor. They should have followed in Southwest (and Easyjet's) path and gone with 737s or Airbus 319s, single class, product. Hire new employees who aren't receiving the same pensions/benefits as regular BA employees. Though that goes against Southwest which treats its employees well, Easyjet has to hire foreign people at a lower wage. Unfortunately its a sad thing, but I think flybe will be able to more effectively offer a true LCC product where BA could not.
