Last year the LGW flight arrived 20 mins early, so had plenty of time, gate check in ticketd me for the 18:25 at no charge despite having a later reservation, and was actually seated on board the 18:25, but then was bumped before start up due to late arriving connecting pax.
I agree you should book on the 20:45, though, just in case.
