My experience is that me4yankees is correct -- UA will credit you with the miles you would have gotten had you taken your original flights, but you'll have to submit documentation. I've successfully achieved this, though it's something of a hassle. Regarding carl92103's comment, I was 1P the last time this happened to me, and UA definitely would NOT credit me with the mileage without actually submitting copies of the tickets and boarding passes.
