You're right, but then... there is always the possibility for the Open Miles option, so you can get a reward flight for double the miles, even when there is no award available. When you earn twice as much (or more) miles through Amex FB card as the DC card, or the Amex MR, you can easily get tickets using this option.

And although AF/KL does not fly directly to Australia, the Open Mile ticket (or -when lucky- the award ticket) is usable on KE or MH, 100000 miles in coach, 150000 in business. (Open Milse: 200000 or 300000).
