We experienced the same thing (since my hubby is the primary on our account). When I need to book online, I actually do not login and manually add the account number in the reservation, and in the comment box, I do put in Diamond member number and upgrade request.
And, a sidenote to watch out for is especially when I stay at hotels previously stayed by hubby, I will checkin with no problem; however, I noted on the receipt (when checking out) sometimes it will switch to my hubby's name (prob pulled from the account number). And, I barely caught it in time. So, def. double check those receipts!!
