Do you find that you could get the upgrade even in more "popular" locations, such as Miami, Chicago, or Las Vegas? I haven't had much luck with these three locations in particular. I haven't seen any correlation to popular cities. I've gotten upgrades in Washington DC, Seattle, San Francisco, and LA, at Ritz-Carltons, Park Hyatts and Fairmonts (and in Europe as well). I have found that if you don't get the upgrade without asking, it does not help to ask -- every time, I've gotten the same answer, which is that the hotel is full so they weren't able to upgrade.
