AND....the room upgrade isn't supposed to happen until check-in. Realize that some hotels do upgades in advance and they sometimes show. But, also realize that they might upgrade you in advance of your arrival and then another Platinum shows up who wasn't upgraded. They push and they get your upgrade since they checked in before you.
OR, someone in "your" room decides to extend their stay. OR, a "musical chairs" game of switching other people's rooms assignments around occurs (for whatever reason), with an impact on your room assignment. Etc., etc., etc.
Just as with airline upgrades/seat assignments, there is a large element of unpredictability. You have to be able to tolerate a certain amount of uncertainty. Bottom line, you'll get whatever you get when you actually check in!
