Buy Elite Status on other airlines?

Can you buy elite status on other airlines besides United?

I have heard that if you are already Platinum on AA, but are going to expire, you can maintain Plat status by paying $395 -$495 (depending on your mileage balance). This will give you one more year of status. And I believe you could keep doing this.

Is their something similar on other airlines?
