As I understand it, it is due to a software issue and, AFAIK, that is in the process of changing. The recent upgrade to the Web Check-in software is programmed by the same vendor that will be programming the next release of the ITM (kiosk) software. When that's done, I've been told that both the Web Check-in and the ITMs will be using software from the same vendor and that will eliminate many of the problems now encountered, such as not being able to reprint a boarding pass or make a change using the ITM after you've used Web Check-in. I could be wrong about the above, but I'm pretty sure that's what is in the works.
