Handling pax with special medical needs

Every once in a while I come across a situation that leads me to think, 'Am I being a jerk here'.

Background:

Booked wife an F award ticket to LAS several months ago, knowing I may be there on business that week but it was not confirmed. Put her in 4E which is my 'favorite' MD80 seat so that if we wound up on the same flight we could swap.

I did wind up in LAS, booked the same flight. UG cleared on Monday for a Friday flight. Took seat 4F. When I did this 6B and 5E were open along with a couple of window seats. The bulkhead was taken.

Situation:

Waiting at gate in LAS, GA calls my name and asks me if we would move to 3E and 3F since they hava a pax that needs an oxygen tank and can't sit in the bulkhead because of it.

I decline for two reasons, first I specifically booked these seats because they are the ones I prefer, and secondly I work on every flight and prefer to have easy access to my laptop and case.

The GA said ok and they'd get someone else.

Get on the plane and the oxygen tank is already in 4F as the FA had put it there expecting they would move us. Get FA to remove the oxygen and explain they got someone else to switch.

The woman that need the O2 was put in 5B, but her husband had to take 3F. Based on knowing that 3E/F were filled in Monday I suspect that the couple that need the O2 were originally booked in the bulkhead.

As it turns out Sean Bradley the 7' 6" former Dallas Mavericks player was the one to switch to 3E as he needed the leg room. So they guy behind me told the O2 lady that he'd switch to 3F, but he'd wait until boarding was done.

About 10 min before departure all of F is boarded except for 4A/B. The couple traveling together in those seats show up and the FA tells them they've been split up and moves O2 lady from 5B to 4B and hubby from 3F to 4A. So now a couple that was traveling together and apparently had reserved seats together was split up, not just so the Q2 tank could be accomidated but so Q2 lady and hubby could sit together.

So questions are:

How accomidating should a person be to something like this? Especially if you have a seating preference and selected those specific seats (i.e. not just randomly assigned).

Shouldn't someone that has special needs be a little more proactive with the airline?

This was my 98th segment this year, shouldn't AA worry a little more about my needs?
