1- My understanding is you can enroll in the Plt challenge after completing the gold, some (me) can even be enrolled in both at the same time.

2- My suggestion to the OP was that he consider going for the challenge next year if he is going to flying a lot. OP has until end of year to get remaining miles, at his own expense. What good is that going to do for limited flying next year, if there is a lot of flying for business, let his company pay for the status.
