If I were in that position I would do the run. I've had gold status for the first time this year, and actually gotten quite a bit of use out of it. Most of my flights are on transcons and onward to Hawaii for business (yes, that sounds cool initially, but quickly becomes old). Being able to board the 767s in Grp 1 is a huge benefit. The occasional sticker upgrade is also very nice (and often on that route, I'll just cash in a 15000 mile upgrade).

I think there is a huge difference between Gold and nothing, and less of a difference between Gold and Platinum. I don't fly internationally very much, so the lounge access at Platinum is of no use to me. That said, I will be reaching PLT this year.
