IMO, it's a good leap to Platinum, which provides one with more desirable benefits and perks (such as Admirals Club with international flying, etc.) but Gold has its points, and they might be enough for you to justify a mileage run using the lower winter fares. Or not. As we are fond of saying here, YMMV.
