Basically you are paying through the nose for transit/airport/landing fees in Paris as well as fuel surcharges (these can be as much as $40 per leg) and perhaps some extra taxes to help people in the developing world (don't remember the details of this last category).

CO doesn't separate the fuel surcharges and so they arev part of their free ticket and, since the flight is direct, you avoid the extra fees for transiting Paris which are among the highest in the world.
