I had a stay in the summer (August) and was very happy. I'd added a note on the reservation that it was our 5th wedding anniversary, so this may have helped.
Upgraded to a club floor, and a pretty good bottle of wine waiting for us in the room. The restaurant was very nice (though I had to argue to convince the E. European waitress that it was OK to serve my Manhattan on the rocks rather than strained in a Martini glass -- she had to call a friend in Canada to get the concept confirmed!)
The view in the lounge is spectacular (you look down on the top of the observation wheel nearby), it's nicely laid out on two floors, and there is an hour and a half of free alochol in the evening, and I quite liked the nibbles. Lounge open all day for soft drinks, which is nice. I had a couple of visitors during the stay and was able to bring them into the lounge without being challenged. The first evening it was full of girls on a hen night, but the rest of the stay very quiet.
Birmingham, where I grew up, really has come a long way with the new developments around the canal area, the Mailbox complex and the new Bull Ring.
