I used to have a pretty bad flying phobia, considerably mitigated over the years. There was a time when I got a bad feeling (and insomnia, etc.) before every flight. After a while, I realized that each time I had a bad feeling, the flight went fine. Eventually, I regarded the bad feeling as an indication that I'd have a good flight, i.e. the bad feeling became transformed into a good feeling.
Now I only worry when the pilot says, "We're going to have a little weather up ahead, so I'm going to ask the flight attendants to terminate the dinner service and TAKE THEIR SEATS RIGHT NOW. Also, you'll notice I've turned on the seat belt sign so, passengers, please return to your seats IMMEDIATELY and make sure your SEAT BELTS ARE BUCKLED." This happened yesterday over the Andes in a thunderstorm -- we spent almost 1-1/2 hours doing a pretty good imitation of a cocktail shaker. And, needless to say, I didn't have a bad feeling before this flight.
