I've been in the OP's shoes regarding early gate closings before, but IIRC, it is not a Delta specific issue.

Do a search, it is pretty much industry standard practice to close a gate 15 minutes prior to departure. It's been discussed pretty well in a few threads here.

To the OP, sorry you had a bad travel day.
