Your success depends on how well the agent processing the upgrade knows the rules, insists on the rules or even recognizes the (often conflicting) rules.

It's the same with UA/LH Z fares ex USA. They all feature a quite visible "fare not upgradable" rule. OTOH, LH M&M miles & eVouchers and UA MP paper SWUs for use on LH metal specifically allow upgrading LH Z fares. So, which rules apply? Those printed on the upgrade vouchers, or those printed in the fare? As usual, YMMV.

Remmber: common sense and consistency are not to be found in the airline industry.
