Any suggestions on whom to follow-up with to have the additional 47.00 USD removed/explained? The person who handled the return at our HLE had no satisfactory explanation.

FWIW, I am Five Star.

PS : I know that AAA members get this service for free. For future reference, it would be worth calling AAA first before calling Hertz.
Call the gold service number and explain what happened. They should clear it up right away. I called them today to resolve being charged an extra day on a rental that I had returned early. The CSR listened to what I had to say and then immediately offered to remove the charge without asking for any additional documentation.
