Cicar (Canary Islands Car Rental) Rental Report

I saw there were no rental reports or reviews on Cicar in the Canary Islands, so I decided I would post one about my experience with them.

Renting from Cicar was very easy. We booked online and they had a wide selection. The only thing difficult was determining whether a car was automatic or not. Some car descriptions had AUT in its title, but did not say automatic, while other did. A quick email to Cicar alerted them to our desire for an automatic car. Many of the big rental companies, Avis and Hertz did not have reasonable cost automatic cars, but Cicar did.

We rented the car from the Cicar at the Tenerife Norte airport. The counter is right in the baggage claim area and just walked up and gave them my information. They check passport, drivers license and international drivers license. They gave us two maps. They also upgraded our car to there luxury class for free, giving us a volvo s60 for the week. It was automatic. The space to pick-up the car is directly across from the airport entrance and it was very easy. I opted to go with the insurance which added an additional 50 Euro to the cost, but felt it was worth it being in a foreign country.

Upon picking up the car, the car had a 1/4 tank of gas, for which they charge you. You then have the option to return the car empty and not be charged or return it with a 1/4 tank and get a refund. I am guessing if the tank is full, they do the same.

The counter representative was very helpful and spoke pretty good english and was able to communicate with us given we spoke some Spanish also. The total cost of the car was around 190 Euro within insurance and the gas charge.

We had no problems with the car and found that there were a number of Cicar locations all over the island in case we did have trouble.

Returning the car is a little trickier than in the US. The airport has poor signage for returning cars and you end up in the lot where you took the car from. The spaces have signage, so it was easy to pick one and just park the car. No one inspected the car. When you get into the airport, you must go to the check-in area of the airport to find the Cicar window. I am not sure if it was the same window where we picked it up. They asked how much gas was in the car, whether it was a 1/4 tank and then proceeded to credit back my charge card for 12 Euro. They took the keys and we were off.

Overall, a very positive experience. I would highly recommend Cicar to anyone visiting the Canary Islands. ^
