And just to correct you - it's not a luxury tax on the upgrade. It's a govt/airport departure/usage tax which is levied in two tiers - econ and premium cabins. Since you upgrade you are liable for the difference between that which you paid originally for your Y ticket and that which is due on a premium ticket.
