People not smoking in their rooms but getting zinged for a few hundred $$'s after they check out because a maid "thought" they did. Fellow travellers reporting when they "think" they smell smoke in a hallway and hotel security knocking on doors to find the source. Travellers ratting on fellow travellers, etc., etc..
And it won't be long before someone who was charged for smoking but who wasn't a smoker takes his story to the press.
I can see a lot of PR downside in this move by Marriott especially when the reports start to roll in from the non-smokers who got zinged because they were in a room that had been smoked in by the previous occupant.
Westin properties I frequent have been non-smoking for almost a year now and I have not noticed any of these "potential" problems. As a matter of fact the two main properties I stay at have had record occupancy rates.
