Don't get too excited about the SPG gold... I think they just implemented a program where you get SPG Gold with a 'three pack' of cheeze whiz.
The extra points for stays are nice but out of a fair amount of stays (maybe 30ish or so over 3 years) I have only once gotten anything which most would consider an actual 'upgrade'.
If you spend over 30k (i think) yearly on amex you may get more bang for your buck with a *wood amex (my 'main' amex card) I do use my Plat (reg not biz, as it was the one they offered me) for purchases where I require the extended warranty as well as lounge access. That being said, now that NWA/CO/Delta lounges reciprocate, buying a membership to any of these would likely be a beter route for lounge access as you could (for example) fly on CO and use either a Delta or NWA lounge if no CO lounge were available. You may NOT do this w/ Plat Amex
