In Margarita Island, Venezuela I got a cab from one part of the island to another. I asked the driver how much it would cost BEFORE I got in, and he gave me a fair price of about $5 US. He helped me get a hotel room and I gave him a nice tip.
He asked me if I would need his services again and I told him to pick me up in a couple days to take me to the airport. He arrived on time and I got in the cab. I knew I made a mistake when I forgot to ask for the fare until we started moving. It should be less than $10.
"Oh yeah how much to the airport?"
"$20"
I wouldn't consider this a scam because it wasn't much money, but I was mad at myself for letting this happen. If you have been to VZ, you know that $10 goes a long way!!
Even here in DC I ask for the cab fare beforehand even though it is set through a zone system. Surprise: you can actually negotiate fares!
