Actually you now can change travel dates after departure, on a *A award, subject to availability and paying a change fee. You can't change routing. The actual rule is:

"For Star Alliance or other airline rewards, changes are permitted prior to outbound travel. Once travel on the ticket has commenced, changes to date and/or flight number are permitted on Star Alliance electronic tickets only (certain conditions apply)."
