I've never thought much about the two keys together but my personal key ring has a similar cable type thingy. I just twist the connector to separate it and remove the keys. I'll check this the next time I rent. If it does maybe I'll keep the cable thingy and replace it with a round key ring. (I've got lots of them cluttering up my drawers.)
