I might just get one French and one Spanish SIM and tell my folks to buy their own if they need to be in touch or they can have people call me.

See if anyone around here has an expired SIM. They wouldn't be able to make outgoing calls but incoming are always free if within a certain window after the card is depleted. Even if not, you can always recharge the card.
