My current favorite hotel in your price range is the Estherea Hotel, which is in a great central, canal location. I'm not sure it would qualify as trendy, but it's definitely nice.

A previous poster mentioned the American hotel - it is a great location, but I found the rooms to be rather dated (actually it was about 5 years ago that I last stayed there, so they could have re-done the place).
