I guess this would be a little difficult had it been the subway series. And, with the Mets down 2-1, it might not be the Mets v. Tigers, but the Cards v. Tigers? In any case, the problem with NYC-DTW flights is that there are three major airports that serve the NY area. So which one would you choose?
I think it'd be a lot easier to pick up bumps on days when you know every traveler and their mom would be flying (e.g., Saturday/Sunday after Thanksgiving, week right before Christmas) than surrounding a single game. You really won't know how many of the opposing team's fan will show for the game, and the great majority of fans at Ford Field would naturally be Tiger's fans (so you wouldn't have as much of a mass exodus from DTW as say the day after the Super Bowl this year).
