Buy a round trip and get your FF# into the reservation prior to ticketing to minimize the possibility of haraSSSSment. Plan ahead and check in online.
Last time I did it, it consisted of "Hi, I'm meeting my wife and two young kids, I'd like a gate pass to meet them at the gate". "Where are the coming from?". "Pittsburgh." "Gate 4, here you go."

Seems easier to me than buying a ticket and later asking for it to be cancelled, planning ahead, checking in on-line, etc., but to each his own.
