I got my first CP in 2002 and was not married then -- I was companionless, so to speak. I wrote the VP in charge of the program then about making it easier to designate a "companion" such as a son, current date, nephew, etc. After all, wasn't the reward for that?
He explained that it would not change and that it was never the intention of the CP to make it easy for you to bring along any (and these are my words) any Tom, Dick or Mary. It was for your companion, in your travels. You already got your 6 free RRs. This was a bonus over and above. At that time you could do the "secret CP exchange" so I did (don't know if it's still in effect).
So, it has nothing to do with SWA getting cheap now and it's not designed to make your switching life difficult as you try to fly your son to Disneyland for free. It's to keep the program for what it is named -- a Companion Pass program.
So, unless you are a GOP House Member, with this program your companion will never easily be a 16 yr old boy this week and a 24 yr old babe in 3 week's time.
I have no problem with that. And I do not believe that any amount of ranting will ever change it.
