I can answer this one.
First...you can't upgrade the flight if it is a UA flight # on LH metal. period. You can only upgrade the flight if it is booked as an LH flight on LH metal (or UA flight on UA metal). So..you are completely out of luck.
Second...you don't trade in miles to get a SWU. If you are a 1K or GS on United, you will get 6 free SWU's per year. You just need to call them to have them printed as a paper voucher for use on LH. That being said, you can also redeem 30K miles for an alternative paper upgrade voucher for use on United. But this is not a SWU. Even with the alternative paper upgrade, it must be a LH flight # on LH metal.
