I'd think about doing a generic name and saying "no ID" to the airline screener, but it is an international trip and I dont think that would work.

On both counts this is a huge no-no. Firstly, you can't purchase a ticket without the exact name of the passenger travelling. Secondly, name changes on purchased tickets are not allowed. It's standard practice. I can see exactly where you're coming from on this, but your suggestion won't work, unfortunately.
