I'm doing a trip the end of this year, and am not sure which friend can come with me yet.

Is it possible for me to purchase tickets now (at the lower fare..) and only name myself? Leaving the other ticket blank to fill in whomever agrees to go with me?

Or, can I just put any name in there and change it (is that a $100 fee)?

I'd think about doing a generic name and saying "no ID" to the airline screener, but it is an international trip and I dont think that would work.
