To my knowledge, the only flights on UA which you may not earn miles are those booked on Priceline, where you bid without knowing ahead of time on which airline you will be flying (there is a term for this which escapes me at the moment)., but I seem to recall hearing about people who have been able to get miles on those flights anyway. On their website, the only mention I can find is very general and just mentions "some flights purchased on the internet."
