This is not nescessarily true.
You can get a round trip transatlantic with connections award ticket for €31 - as long as your trip originates in North America. Which is the case for the OP.
Also, there are no problems whatsoever by earning FB (AF and KL) miles on US domestic travel. You get 100% on all CO fares, 100% on all SU fares, 100% on all DL fares, 100% on all NW fares except V (25%), and avoid flying KL or AF
