Call me partisan, but there is a huge amount of exaggeration in this post.. I've been dealing with passengers in Europe whose bags have been mishandled in PHL for 3 years now, and today's situation is way better than it was then. A few years back, we were handling so many baggage enquiries about European-bound bags ex-PHL that we had to do overtime. Then there was the Christmas system collapse.

These days, bags connecting to Europe thru PHL seem to arrive where they should be on time. The delayed baggage enquiries have dropped massively. Obviously I can only comment on my own department here in Europe, but there is very little in terms of customers complaining about mishandled bags in PHL these days.

One poster quotes a newspaper article which in turn quotes a US Airways employee who 'left the company in 1996'! How on earth is this relevant to the post-merger company in 2006?

Most major US airlines have staffing/pay/union disputes at the moment. To quote an employee who left the company a decade ago devalues the entire argument.
