decided to test this out this morning, was able to change the return no problem, without any grief from the agent, besides being put on hold for a minute to confirm the changes.
Routing changes seem to be allowed as well, she offered AMS-YYZ on KL direct instead of going via DTW (I declined - no 150%eqms on KL for onepass + NW flies A330)
One thing that was not allowed was to add an AMS stopover, so we had to settle for a 23 hour overnight instead.
