You can go TIDS through IATA and get the discounts on hotel / car / cruises etc... Nothing through airlines. If you are in a developing country then it is easier to get TIDS status and is pretty simple to do. Cost is about 175 a year then an offical card is about 80 USD for two years. Saved over 3 grand on my own vacation (one vacation) with the discounts as agents get a much reduced rate. They get a reduced rate for tours / parks and such as well. It's much easier getting the certification if you are outside the USA. Not sure about India's "red tape" is but in my area it was simple to get the necessary paperwork done and over to IATA to get my official certification.

A TA in general gets a commission for booked travel for other people, varies but 5% to 15% is a general range. The biggest benefit is your own personal travel. With an official card you get some other benefits and it helps a little. I am projecting I'll save 10-15 K per year with the card with travel I do myself. I project I'll earn about 4 K per year doing what little bookings I'll do but the benefit for me is my own travel.

Feel free to PM if you want.
