I can't speak from experience...yet, but I have a reservation at a Marriott and was told that I would need to smoke only on my own private balcony. This is fine with me as my spouse does not smoke so I have NEVER smoked inside of a hotel room. I did note the employees name who told me this incase I should need it. I'm guessing that if this is the case there may be a big run on Marriott properties that have balconies. This may be a case by case (property by property) decision.
