Rudi,
Lufthansa's biggest competitors within Germany are Eurowings and Deutsche BA.
Eurowings is a very nice airline! My company uses them every week -- provided you book a little bit in advance they are inexpensive and service is *much* better than LH.
Supposedly LH is very interested in buying a 25% stake -- which is good for collecting FF miles but will undoubtedly lead to LH style service.
Deutsche BA is o.k. Their FF program like their parent is supposed to be lame and redeeming flights -- based on the feedback of a close friend of mine -- a bit difficult.
The 50,000 mileage penalty for German LH M&M members is one major reason why i try to fly with them as little as possible - i find it incredibly unfair. I'm very impressed by UA's FF program and UA is in my opinion a major reason why LH improved their FF program significantly this year.
