Despite what they told you, you can keep the miles for another 3 years if your account shows ANY activity before 10/31/06. This means you can earn or redeem miles in any way - get a credit card, take a flight, redeem an award flight, earn grocery miles, buy yourself some flowers, etc.

A note about grocery miles - you can earn 125 miles for every $250 you spend at Safeway (or Von's and other Safeway brands) but they seem to take longer to post than most other options. It's a good way to keep an account open, however, once everything's set up. Everybody spends at least $250 on groceries over 3 years...
