I'm one of those who has never been all that impressed with SQ. It isn't that there's anything bad about them, but I do find that they're over-rated. I have flown them only in Y, but a few of the things I didn't care for were:
-Usually only a VERY limited beverage service before meals, i.e. O.J., beer, wine. Most airlines offer a full selection of sprits and soft drinks, and I prefer to have a cocktail before I eat. This is available on SQ, but you normally have to ask for it specially and I'd rather not have to ask the crew to go out of their way for me. On the other hand, those who prefer to eat quickly after takeoff probably prefer the SQ way of doing things.
-Seat pitch in economy is nasty. TG, NH, AC and KE seem to provide quite a bit more room.
-Travel on many SQ fares does not provide FF credit
-Somewhat robotic service. While I have never seen rudeness from a SQ crewmember, I find that there tends to be more warmth on other carriers. SQ F/A's sometimes come across as being afraid of doing something wrong and getting into trouble for it. I have often found the atmosphere around SQ to be somewhat prim and uptight. Headset bags have instructions on them that headsets are to be put back in the bags before the F/A's collect them, and magazine racks instruct passengers to return magazines to the racks after reading them--as if they expect that most of us wouldn't be courteous enough to do so without being told. I find it all a bit anal retentive and it doesn't give the best impression of Singapore.
Just my opinions, though. Several friends of mine think that SQ is the greatest thing since sliced bread. To each his own.
