3. If economy is overbooked and KL knows that economy will be overflowed, then they look at the waitlist for employees & friends and reserve enough business seats for them. If there is anything left over then upgrades are processed based on Flying Blue elite level, sometimes also looking at ticket fare class. If economy is still running over and there are still seats left in business other Skyteam elites will be upgraded.
There is a new program being tested which will allow Flying Blue members to upgrade for a fee out of Schiphol and some stations (including JBO?)
Don't know if NW WP can participate.
I am afraid your knowledge of the "general rule" is lacking reality. It just is not true. Staff is not allowed to invite friends, relatives in C-class. O.k., sometimes it happens, but it is not common use.
True is the fact that some of KLM top managers and family get free, booked C-class (holiday-) tickets which can mean that a paying C-class passenger has to travel Y. Crewmembers are fully opposed to that but get in trouble if they dare to speak it out loud.
A senior crewmember was summoned by GM Van Wijk, and was told to shut up about the above mentioned fact.
So do'nt blame the small fish, blame the big ones.
For the record: last year I went to MAD and was unexpectedly upgraded based on my FB level, even without Y fully booked. I guess I must have had a nice smile that day!
