Yes, that's it.

A. KLM does not make seat reservations, they graciously make a note of your seating preference and seating request. Your boarding pass is one of the inputs KLM used in making the initial seat assignment and is not set in stone.

B. Any transfer passenger walking up to transfer desk or gate without a known seat assignment is going to get a seat assigned. Maybe yours.

C. Anyone with a known seat assignment who arrives late at the gate may have been presumed to be a likely no-show and already had their seat given to someone else.

D. KLM logic: If I am checking in and really want a seat which is already assigned and the agent likes me or knows me or works with me, why shouldn't she just remove whoever is in that seat and give it to me in a gesture of personalised customer service?
