Actually, my understanding is that the SQ LHR-SIN-LHR fares are very competitive and all earn miles as well! The last couple of times I've gone to SIN in Y, SQ offered the cheapest direct flight, e.g.
www.leestravel.com (who most UK S'porean students seem to use AFAIK) were offering SQ to SIN for £360+taxes.
