Bad things might be slightly more likely to happen at night, but I believe the vast majority of subway shootings/stabbings in recent years were not actually random muggings gone awry, but fights between people who knew each other.
And also I'm acquainted with several people who, just over the past year, have been robbed (armed and not) - not necessarily on the subway, but in "trendy" areas, after dark.
I guess we better all stay indoors after dark.
Most people who ride the subway after midnight probably do so without incident, but do not take your safety for granted, is I guess the salient point.
This is valid. When riding at night, one should definitely remain alert and stick with other people. One unintentionally good consequence of the less frequent trains late at night is that they are as a result usually more crowded, and crime is much less likely to happen on a reasonably-crowded train than on an empty one. I've found that certain trains (like the uptown 1) are often just as crowded at 2am as they are at 9am.
To the OP: If you're a club kid, I assume you've had some drinks before you head home. If that's the case, I would probably recommend sticking with taxis, since drunk people are MUCH more attractive targets for muggers.
As for the "snobby" cab drivers, if you're stumbling-drunk, I wouldn't want you in my cab either. No driver wants to spend half his shift cleaning vomit off the back seat. If you're sober, however, then they are required to take you wherever you want to go in the five boroughs. If they give you a hard time about your destination, start writing down (or punching into your cellphone) their medallion number. Drivers don't want to risk a complaint.
