The American Express Platinum does not give you elite status on any airline. You do get enrollment in a couple of car rental elite programs and you can use a couple of airline lounges if you have a same day ticket on that airline. Check the American Express website for details. A better deal seems to be the American Express Delta platinum card. There are generous signup mileage bonuses and you get 10,000 base miles each year you have $25,000 in qualified spending. The card gives you double miles for all DL purchases and at gas stations, supermarkets, and hardware stores. There is a special double miles bonus going on now until 12/15 in which you receive double miles for all purchases. Details are also on the American Express web site.
